INTRO
Blackberry Dust is a late-harvest natural Ethiopian coffee from the Buku Abel washing station in Guji. The cup is fruity and sweet, followed by a soft, creamy finish. In the cup: blackberry, wild strawberry, and blueberry yoghurt.
THE PRODUCER
Buku Abel works with around 400 smallholder farmers growing coffee at 1,900 to 2,100 masl. Most cultivate small plots of 0.5 to 2 hectares, often alongside food crops and other trees. In the Guji region of southern Ethiopia, coffee is an important part of everyday life, and the washing station plays an important role in bringing these harvests together and processing the cherries into distinct, high-quality lots.
Ethiopian heirloom is a broad term for the many indigenous coffee varieties found across Ethiopia, many cultivated for generations and appreciated for their complex, floral, fruity, and sweet profiles.
THE PROCESS
The Natural process for this lot involves:
🍒 Hand-picking — cherries handpicked by smallholders around Guji
🔍 Same-day sorting — sorted on the day of delivery to Buku Abel
☀️ Raised-bed drying — whole cherries spread on raised beds and turned regularly for even drying, until the desired moisture is reached
DAK rates the intervention level as low: a traditional natural process with no additional fermentation techniques, so the coffee's natural characteristics develop through the drying process.
THE CUP
Juicy and sweet: blackberry leads, with wild strawberry and blueberry yoghurt, and a soft, creamy finish.
