INTRO
A decade-anniversary release from Takesi, led by Mariana Iturralde — one of the world's most acclaimed producers, known for exceptional quality and truly unique terroir. Lightly elegant, with bergamot and rosehip aromatics meeting a mandarin sweetness. In the cup: bergamot, rosehip, and mandarin.

THE PRODUCER
Takesi, led by Mariana Iturralde, produces some of the world's best coffee, built on exceptional quality and a distinctive sense of terroir. This harvest marks a decade since the very first direct purchase from Mariana — ten years that have grown into a strong, proud partnership. Everyone at Takesi works across all stages of production, from picking to drying, rather than being confined to one part of the process, giving the whole team a shared stake in the coffee's quality and a level of consistency difficult to achieve when responsibilities are more divided. Takesi sits at one of the highest elevations in the world for coffee production — cool temperatures and volcanic soil slow ripening, building intensity and clarity in every cherry.

THE PROCESS
Takesi uses the same washed process across nearly all of its coffees, removing the fruit before fermentation and drying to let each variety's natural character shine. This lot is one of the exceptions the process is standard for — unlike maragogype, whose larger bean size demands adjusted mucilage removal and fermentation time, Java follows the estate's typical washed protocol.

THE CUP
Lightly elegant — bergamot and rosehip aromatics lead, with a mandarin sweetness rounding out the finish.

About this variety

Java can feel floral and refined in clean washed coffees, while natural and extended-fermentation lots can become fuller and more tropical. Roaster tasting notes across the reviewed coffees include jasmine, mandarin, white peach, pineapple, red fruit, molasses and wine-like sweetness. The individual coffee's process and tasting notes remain the sharper guide.

Why this one is different
  • Bolivia
  • Yanacachi
  • 1940-2300 masl
  • Washed

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

Growing conditions in Yanacachi at 1940-2300 masl also shape ripening, sweetness, acidity and aroma.

A little background

Java has a long international history. World Coffee Research records that it was taken directly from Ethiopia to the island of Java by the Dutch in the early nineteenth century. It was later selected in Cameroon for smallholder growing conditions and disease tolerance before reaching Central America. Its name reflects an important stage in that journey, not its genetic origin.

Identification note Java was once treated as a Typica selection, but World Coffee Research reports that genetic fingerprinting identifies it as a selection from an Ethiopian landrace population called Abysinia.

Classification Ethiopian landrace selection

Technical lineage A selection from the Abysinia Ethiopian landrace population, according to World Coffee Research genetic fingerprinting.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
