Prodigal Coffee, founded by Scott Rao and Mark Benedetto, was born from a chance meeting at the SCA Expo in 2017. Mark hired Scott as a consultant for his San Francisco roasting business and they quickly became friends, sharing their passion for coffee. In 2021, they decided to embark on a new venture together, launching Prodigal Coffee in Boulder, Colorado. Their goal is to offer beautiful clean light roasts with impeccable consistency. While many roasters provide light roasts using high-quality green beans, Prodigal distinguishes itself with its strict quality control process. They select green beans through blind cupping, only purchasing lots scoring above 87.5 points. Each roast batch undergoes rigorous weight loss and colour checks and passes through an optical sorter to remove immature beans. Blind tasting of every batch ensures high standards. Prodigal also pays one of the highest average green prices globally, valuing their suppliers’ work. Their meticulous QC protocols guarantee excellent value for their customers.
